The series title, Misplaced Powers, is taken from Dwight D. Eisenhower's farewell address in which he warned: "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."
The paintings were created as if they were photographs, capturing the nightmare scenario of a military/corporate coup in the U.S. Rather than being regular "photos", however, the palette is limited, representing the color of money, that which drives the coup. Many of the images hijack familiar and iconic images so as to make it more familiar and to bring the danger closer to home.
This series is an illustration of that warning and the fear that we are already closing in on that possible outcome; A large portion of the U.S.'s military endeavors are outsourced to private corporate armies (such as Xe (Blackwater), Titan Corp, DynCorp and others) and many of their actions fall outside of any governmental oversight or legal protections. That lack of oversight can easily lead to dangerous consequences that put our whole Democracy in peril.
